After interviewing six candidates, Nets team president Rod Thorn announced general manager Kiki Vandeweghe as the team's interim head coach. Vandeweghe played 13 years in the NBA and was a director of player development in Dallas but has no head coaching experience. Prior to coming to New Jersey, he was the GM for the Denver Nuggets.
Joining Vandeweghe on the coaching staff will be Del Harris. Harris is a veteran coach in the league and has a career record of 556-457. He served as head coach in the league for 14 seasons, with the Rockets, Lakers, and Mavs.
This has the potential to be a very good combination for the Nets. Vandeweghe is often credited with his development of young players, such as Carmelo Anthony and Dirk Nowitzki. Harris is thought of as a very strong teaching coach. He also knows some of the players on the current Nets roster pretty well. He knows Yi Jianlian from the Chinese National Team. Harris coached that team in the 2004 Olympics. Eduardo Najera, Trenton Hassell and Devin Harris were all in Dallas when Harris was there.
Vandeweghe was hesitant to take the coaching job at first but he finally agreed to it as long as he had a veteran assistant. Harris is that guy. This move also has the potential to be more long term then many people may thing. If Vandeweghe is successful and enjoys coaching, he may stick around past this season. The more likely scenario would be Vandeweghe returning to the front office position he loves and allowing Del Harris to become the full time coach. Of course this all depends on the thinking of the incoming ownership group.
I wouldn't expect many roster changes because of the new coaches. Its thought however that Vandeweghe will try to play an up-tempo style. Dallas and Denver both used that type of system when he was part of their staff. The key to that will be how quickly the injured players can return. Former coach Lawrence Frank had planned to play an up-tempo style before he was forced to change his plans due to the onslaught of injuries. Del Harris will likely be the voice on the defensive end of the floor.
I think the Nets finally made a good decision. This duo will take over at practice on Thursday and coach their first game Friday night against Charlotte. Assistant coach Tom Barrise will continue coaching tonight against the Dallas Mavs. A Nets lose tomorrow night will set a new NBA record as the team would fall to 0-18 on the year. Vandeweghe and Harris will do their best to start over beginning with Thursdays practice.
