Mets
A pair of former Mets have signed with division rivals. Catcher Brian Schneider signed on to be a backup for the Phillies and closer Billy Wagner signed with the Braves.
The Mets decided not to offer salary arbitration to any of their remaining free agents. That means they will not receive any draft picks if those players sign elsewhere.
The Mets are rumored to be a possible suitor for utility player Mark DeRosa.
The catching position continues to be a point of focus for the Mets. They signed Chris Coste and gauranteed him a spot on the 40 man roster but not the 25 man roster. They also are continuing to discuss a deal with Henry Blanco. Neither of these players would be considered starting catchers. The Mets top catching target is still Bengie Molina. They have also expressed interest in Rod Barajas.
They have re-signed backup infielder Alex Cora to a one year, $2 million contract.
The Mets are one of the teams interested in signing reliever Takashi Saito.
Yankees
Like the Mets, the Yankees declined to offer salary arbitration to their remaining free agents.
Shelley Duncan, who was taken off the 40 man roster, declined a minor league assignment and therefore has become a free agent.
The Yankees are one of the teams still thought to be in the running for Roy Halladay. Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett has been making his pitch for the Yankees to get him. The two pitchers were good friends when they were both on the Blue Jays.
Derek Jeter, Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, has said his phone line is open to any free agents that have questions about joining the Yankees.
The team has expressed interest in reliever Brandon Lyon. They are also expected to have interest in other top available relievers such as: Mike Gonzalez, Fernando Rodney, Jose Valverde and Rafael Soriano.
If the Yankees decide not to trade for Halladay, they are keeping their options open. Apparently they have been in talks with Detroit about Edwin Jackson. They are also considering a couple pitchers coming off injuries: Ben Sheets and Justin Duchscherer.
The Yankees have had internal discussions about Jermaine Dye. Dye would likely be an option in a corner outfield and DH role.
